Entomichnus isp.

Description: Entomichnus is a vertically oriented, spiraled burrow with numerous smaller burrows branching from the main spirals. Probable tracemaker is a termite, specifically a termite nest.

Age: Triassic
Formation: Chinle
Location: Arizona, USA
Collector: S. Hasiotis
Photographer: A. J. Martin
Comments: Although poorly exposed in this image, a cross-section of part of the spiral structure is visible to the left and finer details of the smaller burrows are evident between the spirals. Termite nests from the Chinle Formation represent some of the earliest known termite nests in the geologic record.
