The Tercera Reunión Argentina de Icnología y Primera Reunión de Icnología del Mercosur was held from March 31 to April 4, 1998 at Mar del Plata in Argentina, organized by Drs. Daniel Poiré, Jorge F. Genise, and Margarita Osterrieth. It was sponsored by the Fundación Antorchas and Larriestra, Curia & Assoc. Thirty-five ichnologists from Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Venezuela, Canada, the United States, and various provinces of Argentina enjoyed Argentine beef, wines, and dances, and also communicated their recent research and exchanged ideas. The 39 contributions were exposed orally and published as Abstracts. They deal with trace fossils from South and North America, Africa and Europe. During the meeting, two field trips were organized by Daniel Poiré and Marcelo Zárate respectively. Daniel showed us invertebrate trace fossils from the Ordovician, and Marcelo, mammal caves and invertebrate burrows from the Pliocene and Pleistocene. In both cases, the traces were exposed in the coastal cliffs. During the four days, Drs. Daniel Poiré, Jorge F. Genise, and Renata Guimarães Netto offered a short course on ichnology with the participation of 20 students, some of them from the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales de Mar del Plata where the meeting took place.
Of particular interest was the visit of Dr. Stephen Hasiotis. Originally, a Workshop on Paleosol Ichnology was planned for discussing continental ichnofacies and other hot topics, with the assistance of Drs. Thomas Bown, Luis Buatois and Gabriela Mángano. Regrettably, Tom, Luis, and Gabriela could not assist, and so, Steve, who delighted us with two conferences, and I, did our best to show to the participants the controversial world of the continental ichnology. Also, Steve stayed at the Laboratory in Buenos Aires for several days after the meeting. We discussed insect traces, took pictures of our respective material, outlined at least eight collaborative papers, and enjoyed a short field trip to Uruguay to see Roselli's wonderful outcrops of fossil insect nests.
The Fourth Argentine Meeting of Ichnology, and second of the Mercosur, will be held at Tucumán (Argentina), probably at the beginning of 2001, and will be organized by Aceñolaza, Buatois and Mángano.
The VII International Symposium on Mesozoic Terrestrial Ecosystems will be held from September 26 to October 2, 1999 at the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales in Buenos Aires. Continental ichnology will be represented at the Symposium with plenary papers by Drs. Sarjeant, Retallack, and Labandeira. Also planned is a special session on Mesozoic continental ichnology.
