Born in Waterbury, Connecticut; raised in Shreveport, Louisiana and various places in Vermont. Undergraduate study at Middlebury College, Masters from the University of Arkansas, PhD from Rice University in 1971. Married to the Reverend Dr. Alice Ellen McCracken since whenever; two kids, Edward and Abby, both married; various cats. Degrees are all in geology but am a generalist at heart. Have lived in Decatur since 1980; have taught at Emory since the Fall of 1984. Spend my summers on Lake Memphremagog on the Canadian border of Vermont, driving through the western states and Canada to get there.
