2008 Udall Scholar and Lester Scholar: Ryan Jones

ryan_jonesRyan is a senior at Emory University academic year 2008-09. He is double majoring in environmental studies and physics and hopes to work with renewable energy. Ryan's passion for the environment began at a young age while camping and traveling with his family. Today Ryan is president of Emory Environmental Alliance and one of the leaders of Atlanta Students for Sustainability, a student organization which engages the community to promote social and environmental sustainability. Ryan is also a senior legislator in Emory's Student Government Association. This summer (summer 2008) he is researching solar panels at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado: "It is challenging work, but both fun and very rewarding," Ryan says. In his free time Ryan likes traveling, playing sports, and going on adventures such as rock climbing with his brother while spending the summer in Colorado. During his coming senior year, Ryan is looking forward to starting a newspaper for the Emory community that will focus on all progressive issues on campus. This publication will be named "The Upside," and Ryan is collaborating with fellow students Jenna Schweitzer and Jeremy Barr in bringing it to press. In addition to the Morris K. Udall Foundation scholarship, Ryan is the winner of the $5,000 departmental James G. Lester Scholarship for fall and spring semesters 2008-09. Congrats, Ryan.
