Guide for Oxford Continuees

The Department of Environmental Studies offers a major (B.S. and B.A.) and a minor in Environmental Studies. Continuees from Emory's Oxford, Ga., campus are among our best students, and we are eager to smooth the transition from Oxford for prospective majors. Although there is no single equivalent department at Oxford, students who have taken courses in Biology, Geology, and Geosciences have an excellent preparation for the major. Without taking courses in these subjects at Oxford, it is certainly still possible to major in Environmental Studies, but more careful planning is required. Please view the typical course sequence in Environmental Studies. Please note that the Department has recently narrowed the range of courses it counts for the Focus Area (elective) component of the major and minor. These must be ENVS courses at the 200-level or above, with the exception that one course at the 100-level is permitted. However, certain Oxford courses are "pre-approved" as exceptions--these are all listed below. If you have any questions about a course not on this list, please contact Dr. John Wegner, jwegner@emory.edu or 404-727-4206 to discuss it. Note that some courses can count for a variety of requirements, but you can only use each course once. Oxford Courses which count towards Environmental Studies majorCourses are listed under the major requirement they satisfy.

ENVS 131 (Concepts of Environmental Studies)

  • BIOL 111 (Env. Science w/lab)

ENVS 132 (Methods in Environmental Studies w/lab)

  • BIOL 135 (Plants & Society w/ lab)
  • BIOL 235 (Field Botany w/lab)
  • BIOL 245 (Freshwater Ecology w/lab)
  • GEOL 141 (Physical Geology w/lab)
  • GEOL 142 (Evolution of the Earth with Laboratory)

Intermediate Natural Science Course (part of Focus Area requirement)

  • BIOL 135 (Plants and Society w/ lab)
  • BIOL 235 (Field Botany w/lab)
  • BIOL 245 (Freshwater Ecology w/lab)
  • GEOL 115 (Meteorology & Climatology w/ lab)

Intermediate Social Science and Policy Course (part of Focus Area requirement)

  • SOC 215N (Social Problems)

Focus Area Credit--electives (note that only one 100-level course can be used to satisfy focus area requirements)

  • Any of the above-listed classes not used to meet other major requirements
  • BIOL 299 (Independent Study)
  • GEOL 115 (Meteorology and Climatology with Laboratory)
  • GEOL 199R (Independent Study)
  • GEOL 250 (Mineral Resources, Energy, and Power with Laboratory)
  • GEOL 141 (Physical Geology w/ Lab)
  • GEOL 142 (Evolution of the Earth w/ Lab)
  • Other courses MAY count, but permission must be sought from the ENVS undergraduate committee. A form must be submitted [MS Word], which includes course details and a description of the environmental content of the course. This can be done while a student is still at Oxford, if that student is an intended major.

Field Course Requirement

  • BIOL 235 (Field Botany w/lab)
  • BIOL 245 (Freshwater Ecology w/lab)
  • GEOL 100N (Desert Geology)
  • GEOL 200N (Dinosaurs and Their World)
  • GEOL 220N (Modern and Ancient Tropical Environments)
  • GEOL 235N (Geology and Culture in Scotland; not English 235N)
